Dallas
Cowboys OLB Anthony Spencer has a bone bruise on his leg which he called
“concerning” heading into Cowboys training camp, ESPN Dallas reports. In fact, Spencer had a very similar injury earlier this offseason that
caused him to miss time from OTA’s already. The injury apparently reoccurred
during the Cowboys conditioning tests.
After the
injury, Spencer indicated to the media that he was being restricted because of
his leg and is contemplating minor surgery that would keep him out a few weeks
and could hinder him into the preseason. It’s logical that a player like 3rd
year DE/OLB Cameron Sheffield out of Troy University would get reps in Spencer’s
absence, but Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has yet to confirm.
The Cowboys
are in a true crossroads with their outside linebacker. Anthony Spencer has
been a solid pass-rushing weapon opposite Demarcus Ware since his arrival in
Dallas. Spencer is currently looking at playing under the franchise tag for
2013 and will need a solid season to get the big pay day he’s been seeking. For most people, struggling through a contract dispute
would be a major off-field distraction but Spencer seems to be in this position
with management each offseason. That being said, it would probably take a
nagging injury to stop him from producing sacks and impacting the game at a
high level. Let’s hope this isn’t that injury.
