Broncos reach out to retired offensive lineman Ryan Lilja

When Denver Broncos center Dan Koppen was carted off the field with a torn ACL at Sunday's practice, it put the team in desperation mode to find a replacement center. In fact they are so desperate that they have reached out to offensive lineman Ryan Lilja who just announced his retirement at the end of the 2012 season about the possibility of coming out of retirement.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that Lilja is thinking it over, and that he'll make his decision in a few days.

A good center is always important to have on your football team. It's like the quarterback of your offensie line. However, when your quarterback has had 4 neck surgeries performed on him and runs a no huddle offense with a lot of pre snap audibles, that importance is magnified. If the Broncos can in fact lure Lilja out of retirement, he would be a great fit for the team. Peyton Manning and Ryan Lilja were teammates on the Indianapolis Colts from 2004-2009. Lilja is familiar with Manning's fast paced offense and his pre snap audibles, which would make this transition much smoother for Manning and the Broncos. If Ryan Lilja does decide he wants to play, and he can get back into good enough shape to play, this could be the move that saves the Denver Broncos season.
