The Pittsburgh Steelers recently announced that quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger underwent minor surgery on his right knee. The procedure was
a scope performed to clean up meniscus damage, according to Albert Breer of NFL.com.
The Steelers encouraged Roethlisberger to undergo the
operation now so that he will be able to recover in time for the start of
training camp. Big Ben underwent a similar procedure on his left knee seven
years ago, and it sidelined him for four games.
"We advised him to get the surgery done to ensure he will be completely healthy for the start of training camp," Tomlin said in a statement released by the team. "This surgery will have no long-term effects on his health."
With Roethlisberger out, veteran backup Bruce Gradkowski and
rookie Landry Jones are getting more reps with the first-team offense.
Considering Roethlisberger has only played all 16 games in one of his nine
seasons in the NFL, it’s probably not a bad thing for the reserves to gain some
time with the starters.
