Steelers’ Sean Spence predicts he will play in 2013

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Sean Spence’s rookie season ended quickly, as he suffered a significant knee injury during the last game of the preseason. The injury was severe enough that it was expected to keep Spence out until at least the 2014 campaign. However, Spence told Ed Bouchette of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that his goal is to play this season.
"I'm going to continue to attack this like I'm going to play this year," Spence said after watching another spring practice Wednesday. "I'm in meetings and preparing as if I'm practicing. I'm just going to continue to get better and I'm looking forward to the season."
Spence has been attending Steelers practices, and the team is expected to carry him on their injured reserve until he is healthy enough to return. Some coaches don’t know that he’ll ever be able to make it back considering the extent of his injuries. Spence underwent surgery on three ligaments in his knee, and there was also damage to the peroneal nerve behind the knee. If this nerve doesn’t heal properly, it can be debilitating.

Despite the uphill battle he faces, Spence is confident he’ll be able to return for the Steelers.
"I know I'm going to beat the odds,'' Spence said. "I'm not even worried about that. The progress that I have made, the doctors say that I've already beat the odds. I'm just keeping my faith in God and knowing he's going to give me another chance."
