The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year deal with free
agent pass rusher Dwight Freeney yesterday, according to Ian Rapoport of
NFL.com.
Freeney’s new contract with the Chargers will pay him $8.75 million over the next two seasons. The agreement also includes incentives, which are likely to be tied to Freeney’s sack totals and other figures related to rushing the quarterback.

Freeney’s new contract with the Chargers will pay him $8.75 million over the next two seasons. The agreement also includes incentives, which are likely to be tied to Freeney’s sack totals and other figures related to rushing the quarterback.
The Chargers jumped into the pass rusher market earlier in
the week after it was announced that linebacker Melvin Ingram tore his ACL
during practice on Tuesday. San Diego met with Freeney on Wednesday and
Thursday, and talks between the Chargers and the veteran continued through
Friday and Saturday until a deal was reached.
Freeney has been an All-Pro pass rusher in the NFL,
recording a whopping 107.5 sacks during his 11 seasons with the Indianapolis
Colts. However, he struggled handling the Colts’ transition to the 3-4 defense
last season.
For this reason, most expected Freeney to join a team that
offered him an opportunity to play in a 4-3 as a defensive end. The Chargers
play a 3-4, so it will be interesting to see how Freeney fits in with the team
and how productive he is.
