After his 2011 season, University of Alabama running back Eddie Lacy appeared a lock to become a high draft pick. However, before his senior season Lacy underwent fusion surgery on his toe, a procedure that had NFL teams concerned about the running back's durability moving forward.
Lacy ultimately landed with the Green Bay Packers later than expected, and it's now being reported that the concerns surrounding the running back's toe were unfounded. Alabama team doctor E. Lyle Cain Jr. told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (courtesy of Pro Football Talk) that any worry about Lacy's long-term toe health has passed.

“The joint underneath the toenail was fused to allow the ligament to work better basically,” Cain said. “It’s something you do to give you a better push-off. His big toe moves just like a normal big toe in terms of motion. . . . If you fused it completely, it’d give you a stiff big toe and you can’t push off and that’s a big problem. In Eddie’s case, he does not have that. His fusion does not affect his big-toe motion.”
Following the procedure, Lacy went on to rush for 1,322 yards and score 17 touchdowns during his season season at Alabama. The Packers are hoping this type of production carries over at the professional level, and it doesn't seem like Lacy's toe should stand in the way.
