The New York Giants are confident that they'll be able to reach a long-term deal with wide receiver Victor Cruz. For his part, Cruz has said that he'd like to remain with the Giants. Still, a contract agreement hasn't been reached, and Pro Football Talk is reporting that the next seven to 10 days are regarded as "important to the objective of getting Cruz signed."
It's unclear why this time period is considered so pivotal, but PFT presumes it means the Giants would like to have Cruz on the field for the bulk of the team's Organized Team Activities (OTAs) that begin the offseason program.
If the Giants and Cruz are unable to reach an agreement on a long-term deal, the wide out would be left to sign a one-year, $2.89 million restricted free agency tender. He's not technically under contract, so he could hold out for the start of the season without a fine or other penalty.
PFT notes that this could go on up until Week 10, which Cruz could sign the tender for a reduced amount of $1.19 million. He'd then finish out the season with New York and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
