The Philadelphia Eagles selected offensive lineman Danny
Watkins in the first round two years ago. Now, after taking another offensive lineman
with their first pick, the Eagles’ are getting crowded up front. This means
that Watkins could become a roster casualty, according to Vaughn Johnson of The
Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lane Johnson – recently selected by the Eagles with the
fourth-overall pick – is expected to become the team’s starting right tackle.
Jason Peters slots in as the team’s left tackle, while Jason Kelce will man the
center position again.
This leaves three players – Todd Herremans, Evan Mathis and
Watkins – fighting for two guard positions. Herremans appears to be a lock to
claim one of the spots, and Johnson notes that Mathis has outplayed Watkins.
If he’s unable to win a starting spot, the Eagles could
retain Watkins as a reserve player. They could also elect to cut ties
altogether, considering the coach that drafted him is now with another team.
That coach – Andy Reid – could potentially look to add
Watkins if he becomes available. Johnson notes that the former firefighter
could also look to Canada to continue his professional career. Watkins is a
native of British Columbia, and the B.C. Lions hold his rights after they
selected him with the fourth-overall pick in the 2010 CFL Draft.
