Bears rumors: Chicago could cut Gabe Carimi

Entering offseason workouts, former first-round pick Gabe Carimi is facing an uphill battle for not only a starting spot with the Chicago Bears, but a place on their roster. Cabrini was the only noticeable absence from the start of Chicago’s OTAs yesterday, and Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune reports that Chicago could ultimately cut ties with Carimi later in camp.

At this point last season, Chicago was hoping Carimi could return from significant knee surgery to retake the team’s starting right tackle job. Now, he finds himself fighting for a position on the Bears’ roster.
Despite the situation he finds himself in, Carimi was a no-show at the onset of the team’s voluntary OTAs yesterday. ESPN is reporting that Carimi hasn’t been with the Bears since the team held a three-day mini-camp in April. At the time, he reportedly told Chicago that he planned on skipping the second phase of the offseason program in order to continue his training in Arizona.

There are several competitions ongoing throughout the Bears’ offensive line for starting positions. However, Carimi is more likely competing for a job as a backup tackle or guard. If he’s unable to impress and claim a reserve role, Chicago could elect to cut him.
