Raiders cut Darrius Heyward-Bey, Michael Huff

The Oakland Raiders cut a pair of former first-round picks yesterday, as the club parted ways with wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and safety Michael Huff, the team announced.

The Raiders shocked everyone when they took Heyward-Bey with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The wide out was a combine king, as he remains one of the fastest at his position. He was able to average roughly 800 yards receiving over the past two years, but he never developed into the No. 1 option the Raiders envisioned.

Huff was also selected No. 7 overall, but Oakland made him their first-round pick in 2006. His cut doesn’t appear to be due to his play on the field, as he’s been an above-average safety. It’s more likely that the team no longer wanted to pay him as one of the game’s best at his position.
