Reggie Bush signs with Detroit Lions

Reggie Bush had a career season in 2012 for the Miami Dolphins, and the former Heisman Trophy winner*, has signed a four-year contract with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday.

For the Lions they may have finally got themselves a running back to replace the unfortunate Jahvid Best - who has succumb to concussions - and an every down back who will take the work off of Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell.  Bush improved his pass protection last year, and was also a useful receiver out of the backfield much like Ray Rice.

With an increased role in Miami, Bush posted more than 950 rushing yards and more than 30 receptions in each of his past two seasons. The last Lions players to accomplish that feat was Hall of Famer Barry Sanders from 1997 to 98.
What's interesting is that Bell, the player whom Bush will replace on passing downs, was one of the most productive receiving backs in the NFL last season. Among tailbacks, only Darren Sproles posted more receiving yards last season.
It's easy to forget that the Lions started out 5-0 in 2011 before Best's season was ended prematurely. If Bush proves to be an upgrade on Bell in terms of versatility and matchup exploitation, the offense can reach those heights again this season.

Detroit have the potential to be an offensive powerhouse next season with free-throwing Matt Stafford aiming at Calvin Johnson, and the dynamic Bush with ball in hand.  In a division with Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler and Adrian Petersen - the Lions may be able to roar at last.
