The Pittsburgh Steelers are a veteran club that is facing
several difficult decisions this offseason. While some veterans such as Ben
Roethlisberger and Troy Polamalu are expected to be retained, Pittsburgh will
likely part ways with Casey Hampton, James Harrison and Rashard Mendenhall this
offseason, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
La Canfora notes that Roethlisberger and Polamalu will
likely restructure their contracts once again in order to help the Steelers
work back under the salary cap. However, there is only so much wiggle room, and
as a result some veteran players will not return.
This is almost certainly the case with wide receiver Mike
Wallace, but it could also mean the end of several former cornerstones in
Pittsburgh. Hampton was the pivotal nose tackle in the Steelers’ 3-4 defense
for years, while Harrison gave quarterbacks and offenses in general issues.
Mendenhall had his troubles off the field, but he showed bursts of extreme
talent while on it.
