Rams rumors: Steven Jackson negotiations ‘look good’

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson can void his remaining contract and sign elsewhere in free agency, but head coach Jeff Fisher said “thus far things look good” when it comes to working out an agreement that will keep the veteran with the team, according to Jim Thomas of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“We’ve had discussions with Eugene Parker (Jackson’s agent), and thus far things look good,” Fisher said. “I think it’s identifying what both sides want moving forward. ‘Jack’ knows how I feel about him and that we want him back. But we’ve got time. We’ve got a few more weeks and we’ll see where it goes.”

Jackson is entering the final year of his contract that will pay him $7 million. However, he can void this contract and hit the open market if he so chooses.

He could void his deal, and the Rams wouldn’t necessarily be unhappy with the decision. While they want to retain Jackson, they aren’t crazy about paying a running back that will be 30 years old entering the 2013 season $7 million.

What could happen is that Jackson voids his deal and renegotiates with St. Louis. In exchange for giving up his $7 million salary for next season, the veteran would likely want some sort of assurance beyond 2013. This could complicate matters, but all signs point to Jackson and the Rams reaching an agreement.
