Saints Rumors: More contract restructures

Following on from news in regards to Ben Grubbs restructured contract as reported by Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, the New Orleans Saints are continuing to work toward getting under the salary cap, they made another move.

The Saints have cleared an additional $2.05 million in cap space by restructuring the contract of linebacker David Hawthorne.

Hawthorne had been scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus on the third day of the league year. But the Saints erased that by giving Hawthorne a $3 million signing bonus on Tuesday. Instead of having the scheduled roster bonus all count toward this year’s cap figure, the signing bonus allows the $3 million to be spread out over the life of Hawthorne’s contract.

Hawthorne’s cap figure has dropped from $4.76 million to $2.51 million.

Even more good news followed, where guard Jahri Evans has restructured his contract to free up $3.12 million in cap space. The Saints gave Evans a $4.16 signing bonus up front, but dropped his base salary from $7.2 million to $3.04 million.

Evans had been scheduled to have a $9.86 million cap figure. But the restructure drops that figure to $6.74 million.

Short term this may entice defensive players to the Superdome during the free agency period which opens on Monday.
