With teams scrambling to get under the salary cap, several
high-cost veteran players remain candidates to be released by their clubs. Following
another disappointing campaign, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha
falls into this category, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.
Asomugha is owed $15 million in 2013, of which $4 million is
guaranteed. The former All-Pro was considered one of, if not the, top cornerbacks
in the NFL when the Eagles signed him to a lucrative free agent contract.
However, Asomugha hasn’t performed up to his hefty deal,
leaving Philadelphia and its fans in a tough spot. Rosenthal notes there is a
chance that Asomugha and the Eagles work out an agreement to restructure the
veteran’s deal and reduce his potential cap hit to the team.
But ultimately Rosenthal views the most-likely scenario as
Philadelphia releasing Asomugha after two disappointing seasons. Fellow
cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie could also part ways with the Eagles
this offseason, as it appears significant change is coming in Philly.
