Following the end of the regular season, Dallas Cowboys
linebacker Anthony Spencer said he would “love” to remain with the team. The
Cowboys apparently have interest in retaining the free agent, as executive vice
president Stephen Jones told Rainer Sabin the following regarding Spencer:
“We’re always in the business of keeping great football players,” Jones said Tuesday. “And he is one of those.”
Prior to last season, Spencer was pegged with the $8.8
million franchise tag. He went on to have his best season with the Cowboys,
totaling 95 tackles and 11 sacks. This earned the sixth-year player an invite
to his first Pro Bowl. Given his production, Spencer figures to be one of the
most coveted defenders on the open market.
His fit with the Cowboys isn’t as clear as last year, as the
team is shifting to a 4-3 scheme. Spencer would likely be used as a defensive
end and not a linebacker in the new system. For this reason and due to the fact
that Spencer is likely to command a significant contract this offseason, the
Cowboys remain unsure if they’ll be able to retain him.
