The San Francisco 49ers are expected to trade backup quarterback Alex Smith this offseason, and the Kansas City Chiefs are viewed as
the team currently expressing the most interest in the former No. 1 overall
pick, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.
That means that the better question is where Smith will end up. Although one source said it's far too early to guess, Kansas City appears to be the most interested team.
The Chiefs are in need of a quarterback, and Cole doesn’t
get the feeling that they will use their No. 1 overall selection in the
upcoming NFL Draft on one. The top QBs available, including Geno Smith and Matt
Barkley, aren’t viewed as being worthy of the pick, and neither may even be
selected in the first round, much less with the first-overall pick.
The 49ers have said it’s unlikely they will cut Smith this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to retain him as Colin
Kaepernick’s backup. Due to his 2013 salary, San Francisco is expected to trade
him.
Beyond the Chiefs, the Arizona Cardinals are also expected
to express interest in Smith.
