Cardinals rumors: Alex Smith on Arizona’s radar

The San Francisco 49ers acknowledged yesterday at the NFL scouting combine that they would likely shop quarterback Alex Smith this offseason, and the Arizona Cardinals are emerging as one of several teams interested in the former No. 1 overall pick.

San Francisco hopes to recoup some of Smith’s value as they enter what’s perceived as a weak market for quarterbacks; in free agency, trade and the draft. If the quarterback had it his way, he’d be released to hand pick his next team.

If Smith is ultimately cut and not traded, ESPN’s John Clayton believes he could make a beeline to Arizona. San Francisco may prefer not to have Smith sign in the division, which could prompt them to trade him elsewhere. There figures to be at least some interest in his services considering the number of teams that have questions surrounding their quarterback position.

The Cardinals are one of these teams and would seem to be a potential fit for Smith. However, Kent Somers  of The Arizona Republic doesn’t see Arizona making a trade for Smith following the debacle with Kevin Kolb.
