At some point nearly every little boy in America
dreams of playing in the NFL. From little league, to high school, and the collegiate
level young men throughout the nation train yearly to one day earn a shot at becoming a pro. From February 23rd-26th over 300 young
men and top prospects from across the country will have a chance to showcase
their talents to scouts and coaches in the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.
Going into the NFL Combine many scouts are already
keeping a watchful eye out for a few key prospects that could be “the next big
thing” in the NFL with Geno Smith, QB from West Virginia, sitting atop a few
mock drafts with the number one pick for the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2012 Smith completed
369-of-519 attempts for 4,205 yards,42 touchdowns, six interceptions, and ended
the season with 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns, reported NFL.com. Most
likely to go second, to the Jacksonville Jaguars, in the NFL Draft is Georgia’s
outside linebacker Jarvis Jones. Jones led the nation in 2012 in sacks (14.5),
tackles for loss (24.5), and forced fumbles (7), along with 85 tackles, four
deflections, and an interception, according to NFL.com.
Although they probably will not be top ten picks, Alabama,
back-to-back BCS National Champions, has three players with the top ranking for
draft picks at their positions; Eddie Lacy, Chance Warmack, and Dee Milliner at
running back, guard, and cornerback respectively. Lacy will not participate in
the combine due to a shoulder injury.
With the combine rapidly approaching here are Mike Mayock’s
top pre-combine position rankings for the 2013 NFL Draft:
Wide Receiver:
Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee
Tight End: Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame
Center: Travis Frederick, Wisconsin
Tackle: Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M
Defensive End: Bjoern Werner, Florida State
Defensive Tackle: Sharrif Floyd, Florida
Outside linebacker: Dion Jordan,
Oregon
Inside linebacker: Alec Ogletree, Georgia
Safety: Kenny Vaccaro, Texas
The tight ends, offensive lineman, and special teams’
prospects will be the first group to work out on Saturday, followed by
quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers on Sunday, defensive lineman and
linebackers on Monday, and defensive backs on Tuesday.
