Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who was
the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, is attempting a comeback that he
hopes will result in him eventually playing professionally again, according to
Kristian Dyer of Yahoo! Sports.
“The last few years, the things going through my life, football is my job and it is how it feeds my family. People would say [that] I didn’t love the game but that pisses me off. People don’t know the real you but I want people to know the real me and see what I can do. People are always saying that I’m a bust. I want show them I’m not. I’m committed to this now.”
Russell hasn’t appeared in the NFL since the 2009 season,
but he’s still only 27 years old and says he’s committed to football. His first
task will be returning to playing shape, as he currently checks in at 308
pounds, according to Dyer. He has shed several pounds, and he’s training with
former NFL players such as Jeff Garcia and Marshall Faulk.
Russell’s most extensive stretch in the NFL came in 2008
when he appeared in 15 games for the Raiders. That season he completed 53.8% of
his passes for 2,423 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
