Jon Gruden will leave the Monday Night Football booth to
become the next head coach of the San Diego Chargers, predicts Daniel Jeremiah
of NFL Network.
Jon Gruden. This is the perfect opportunity for both parties. Gruden gets a proven veteran quarterback in Phillip Rivers and a decent amount of authority in player personnel, while the Chargers get a big-name headline grabber to help sell tickets and revitalize the offense.
In a long-expected move, the Chargers cleaned house Monday.
San Diego parted ways with coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith.
Jeremiah believes the open position in San Diego will
provide Gruden with enough incentive to return, given the presence of quarterback
Phillip Rivers, who was once considered an ‘elite quarterback.’ Also, Jeremiah
believes Gruden will receive a “decent amount of authority in player personnel.”
At this point, it’s not clear if Gruden is seriously
considering a return. It’s also to be determined which coaches the Chargers
will target. Andy Reid expressed interest, but he doesn’t appear to be a fit.
Meanwhile, San Diego is said to have interest in Indianapolis Colts interim
coach Bruce Arians.
