Cowboys’ owner Jerry
Jones has virtually and publicly demoted head coach Jason Garrett with his
hiring of Bill Callahan as the franchise’s new offensive coordinator.
From this statement it
seems that Jones is attempting to forge a new perspective on a situation that
could very well have an ulterior motive at hand. One thing that is almost guaranteed
if Garrett does not help Dallas improve considerably in the 2013 season, is
that he has a good chance of also being forced out of the loop of things in
Jerry Jones’ “shake up”.

Callahan’s hiring comes
as the second by Jerry Jones in an attempt to “shake things up” with the Dallas
Cowboys following his firing of former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Callahan,
56, has worked with the Oakland Raiders as their offensive coordinator when they
played in Super Bowl XXXVII, which they lost to the Buccaneers, and two years
as the Raiders head coach from 2002-2003 and ending with a 15-17 overall record, according to ESPN.com.
With the recent string
of events many people believe that Jones is becoming more of a detriment to the
team rather than the advanced, decision maker that the franchise is in serious
need of. According to NFL.com Jerry Jones issued this statement regarding the
matter,
“It was me that said, now as head coach, I want you
[Garrett] to call the plays…Now times have changed since that time – gotten more
complicated – and I’ve had a lot of people say, Jason needs to have the overall
picture. Having said that, Jason has never said, ‘Boy, that’s a prerequisite, I
want to call the plays. I want to be there.’ So, anything we do here that basically
takes that responsibility, moves it away from him – let’s say, calling the play
or putting a game plan together, but gives it over to the overall team – is a
positive thing. And he is not only for it, he is encouraging it…..Don’t think
we’re throwing all the water out, we’ve got a lot of things about our team -- the problem is a deal called 8-8.”
The 2012 season marks
the third year that the Cowboys have ended the season at or below a .500
winning percentage.
John Garrett, Jason
Garrett’s brother and Dallas’ former tight ends coach and passing coordinator, was
allowed by the Cowboys to seek employment with other NFL teams and has signed
with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to take on the job as their wide receivers coach,
reported Todd Archer of ESPN.com.
