49ers Injury Report: Justin Smith Diagnosed with Torn Triceps

The San Francisco 49ers announced yesterday that defensive lineman Justin Smith has a bone spur attached to a piece of his triceps tendon that became detached in his left elbow, reports Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Defensive tackle Justin Smith had a bone spur attached to a piece of his triceps tendon that became detached in his left elbow, the 49ers clarified Thursday morning.

Maiocco adds that Smith has been diagnosed with a partially torn triceps, with the partial tear being to his tendon and not his muscle. Smith has been sidelined since sustaining the injury during a Dec. 16 game against the New England Patriots.

If Smith would have tore his triceps completely he would require surgery which would keep him out for the remainder of the season. As things stand, Smith will undergo surgery following the season and can rejoin the team once he rebuilds the strength in his arm. The 49ers are hoping that they’ll get the defensive end back this season.
