Eagles Injury Report: DeSean Jackson Placed on IR

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson has been placed on the injured reserve by the Philadelphia Eagles.  He suffered a rib injury Monday night against the Carolina Panthers, but the extent was not known.  Today, the team made the announcement as they were also announcing the release of defensive end Jason Babin.

According to Cindy Boren of the Washington Post, Jackson underwent a CT scan today that revealed fractured ribs.  The injury will require at least six weeks to heal which means Jackson will be out for the remainder of the season.

While under normal circumstances this would be a big blow to the Eagles, this season it won't have much impact.  The Eagles lost their seventh-straight game on Monday night and are hopelessly out of playoff contention.  Their head coach appears to be on the way out, their starting quarterback has not been cleared to play and likely won't return when he is cleared, and the team is in shambles.  The loss of Jackson is a tough one, but it hurts Jackson more than it hurts the Eagles.

This, of course, does not mean Jackson isn't productive.  He's more than productive.  In fact, he's the leading receiver on the Eagles' roster.  This season, Jackson has 45 catches for 700 yards.  Used a lot a a kick-return man in the early part of his career, Jackson has proven himself as one of the better receivers in the league.

Philadelphia dropped to 3-8 on the season.  Vaunted as the team to beat last year, the Eagles fell flat.  Again this season, many picked Philadelphia to reach the Super Bowl.  They won't come close.  It's been a bad year, and DeSean Jackson's injury is just another blow to an already KO'd team.
