Detroit Lions at Washington Redskins
Sunday September 22nd 1:00 PM (EST)
Line: Redskins by 2.5
The Washington Redskins host the Detroit Lions in a Week 3 matchup that the 'Skins desperately need to win to prevent their season from getting out of control. Obviously the dreaded 0-3 hole wouldn't spell the end for the 2013 Redskins. However, only five teams have made the playoffs after starting 0-3 since 1978, the year the NFL adopted the 16-game schedule.
A lot of the blame for the Redskins' early struggles has fallen on quarterback Robert Griffin III and the coaching staff for misusing him. While Griffin has not looked like the player he was in his rookie season, the Redskins defense has been absolutely brutal.
So far this season, the Redskins defense has given up 511.5 total yards per game, which is the most yards allowed by a defense in the NFL. I cannot think of a taller order for a struggling defense than to try to stop the best wide receiver in the game, Calvin Johnson. Stopping Johnson alone is close enough to impossible, but if running back Reggie Bush is healthy enough to play Sunday, the Redskins defense could be in for another very exhausting outing.
RGIII will have his best game of the season so far against the Lions. Griffin knows that he needs to run the football more to provide the Redskins offense with the spark it desperately needs. I think that is something the Redskins have worked on a lot in practice this week, and I expect Griffin to look more like the RGIII we've grown accustomed to in his rookie season.
The offense will be much improved, and they will keep the Redskins in the game for all four quarters. Unfortunately, I don't think the defense will be able to do enough against Matthew Stafford, Reggie Bush (if he plays), and Calvin Johnson to prevent the 'Skins from falling to 0-3.
Final Score: Lions 33 Redskins 30
