Panthers' Cam Newton Fined $10,000 for Visor

The NFL has fined Carolina Panther quarterback Cam Newton $10,000 for the visor he's been wearing throughout his entire NFL career. The issue the NFL has with Newton's visor is the clips on the visor, specifically the logos visible on the clips. As ESPN notes, the NFL rulebook states:

No invisible identification of a manufacturer's name or logo on the exterior of a helmet or on any attachment to a helmet is permitted unless provided for under a commercial arrangement between the League and manufacturer.

Because Nike paid for that right, the Under Armour logo is a violation of the rule. The NFL was not made aware of the infraction until Forbes pointed it out earlier in the week.

The Panthers had previously tried blacking out the white Under Armour logos, but this was apparently not sufficient in the eyes of the NFL and the logos must now be completely concealed.

The fact that the NFL didn't notice this violation until into the third season of Cam Newton's career would suggest that this is quite a trivial matter for the NFL to be concerning itself with. The question now is if other NFL players in violation of the rule will be chased down by the League. Forbes named other players who have worn the same visor as Newton, including Terrelle Pryor, Josh Gordon and Eric Reid.
