Welcome to Cadence Call where I give you my bootleg breakdown
for each game in the AFC East. Hard to
believe it is already Week 4 in 2013 NFL season. It goes by fast and if you do not stop and
smell the footballs, you might miss it.
The NFL season is like your child.
One day you are wiping butts and changing diapers and before you know it,
he and his mates are trashing your living room and drinking what is left of
your Bourbon. Remember though, the best
thing about kids, is making them.
If you have the means, pair your Week 4 AFC East games with a few pints of Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout and a Padron Serie 1926 No. 2 Maduro. You will not be disappointed.
Pick it, pack it and light it up.
Cadence Call regular season record (7-10). Now, on to the game previews.
New England Patriots (3-0) @ Atlanta Falcons (1-2) (Sunday Sept 29, 8:30PM ET)
*Line: Atlanta -2.5
Weather: Dome
Everyone and their mom believe the New England Patriots defense needs a real test before they can be called semi-legit. Well, ask and you shall receive. The Patriots travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons and the Pats D is going to need everything it can muster to stop quarterback Matt Ryan and company.
The Patriots pass defense is ranked an impressive sixth overall with 188 yards allowed per game while the Falcons’ offense is ranked seventh in yards per game with 289. However, the Patriots traditionally have trouble covering the middle of the field and pass plays down the seam. Look for Ryan and the Falcons to exploit this weakness. Falcons’ tight end Tony Gonzalez could cause trouble for the Patriots’ linebackers as they drop into coverage.
Vegas have Atlanta -2.5. It will be a game time decision but I think Gronkowski plays and the rookie wide receivers continue to improve while Julian Edelman continues on his pace to become the receptions leader this season. Enjoy your stout and Padron and take the Patriots plus the points as Tom Brady and his bunch put a hood on the overrated Falcons, 28-24.
New York Jets (2-1) @
Tennessee Titans (2-1) (Sunday Sept 29, 4:05 PM ET)
*Line: Tennessee -4
Weather: 79°F with a 40% chance of showers
Vegas have the Titans -4 at home and this will be another close game. The Jets defense is ranked a very impressive third overall in yards allowed per game at 270 while the Titans offense is ranked an unimpressive 29th overall with 309.7 yards per game. However, do not let that number fool you for the Titans. They have play makers on offense such as running back Chris Johnson and Jake Locker is a capable NFL quarterback.
Some might say that the Jets high defensive ranking is the product of scheduling. However, when the schedules were made, no one anticipated the Patriots offense would be so dismal and while the Jets committed enough defensive penalties to make head coach Rex Ryan vomit in his mouth and swallow it back down, five times over, they should play more disciplined this Sunday against Tennessee.
Geno Smith gained more experience points with the win last week over the Buffalo Bills. One could argue the Jets did everything they could to lose that game and the Bills did everything they could not to win it, but the fact remains, Smith made the throws when he had to (including the eventual game winning touchdown toss to Santonio Holmes) and the defense made the stops when they needed to.
However, Tennessee has a bigger and better secondary than the Bills and their overall defensive scheme will cause more problems for Smith. The Titans just have enough on offense to do enough damage and Geno Smith will struggle, as the Titans' defense will bring pressure. Take the Titans minus the points and watch the Titans ground the Jets, 24-17.
*Line: Baltimore -3.5
Weather: 74°F Mostly sunny
The Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Joe Flacco are still waiting for their long-range air assault to make an appearance. The Ravens are ranked a very poor 27th in passing yards per attempt with 6.3. With a Bills secondary depleted by injuries, this game is the perfect springboard for Flacco and the Ravens to get their vertical passing attack back on track. If Flacco cannot go down the field, tight end Dallas Clark is playing well and running backs Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce are excellent check down options.
One could argue last week that the Bills were given a win on a Gang Green platter and they failed to take it. The Jets literally imploded on defense against the Bills and the Bills failed to capitalize on their mistakes. Buffalo will not have that opportunity this Sunday. If the Bills want a win here, they are going to have to win this game with no help from the Ravens.
The Ravens are morphing into a solid team on both sides of the ball and Flacco and his birds will get the passing game going in a big way so take the Ravens minus the points and watch them pass their way to victory in Orchard Park, NY, 31-21.
Miami Dolphins (3-0) @
New Orleans Saints (3-0) (Monday Sept 30, 8:30 PM ET)
*Line: New Orleans -7
Weather: Dome
This game will tell us if the Miami Dolphins have the staying power to contend with the New England Patriots for the AFC East title. One cannot argue that head coach Joe Philbin has them playing well and the team as a whole is much improved. The Dolphins have been hampered by injuries on defense with Cameron Wake suffering a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee last week and cornerback Dimitri Patterson (groin) and defensive lineman Paul Soliai (knee) all hobbling.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill and his new favorite target, wide receiver, Brian Hartline, should hook up for some scores while Mike Wallace needs to get back into the game plan.
For the Saints, head coach Sean Payton is back on the sideline and new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan, will give the Dolphins’ offense a variety of coverages and blitz packages. Saints quarterback, Drew Brees, was back to his old self last week against the Arizona Cardinals throwing for 342 yards with three passing touchdowns and one running touchdown.
Who will run this town Monday night? The Saints will, because they are whips not Volvos and they will give the Fish their first loss of the season in the Big Easy, 31-21.
