Each NFL team needs to get down to 75 players on their roster by Tuesday afternoon, and the Titans did just that by releasing thirteen players on Monday and placing veteran wide receiver Kevin Walter on the team's regulars season PUP (physically unable to perform) list, according to Terry McCormick of the Titans Insider.
Walter was signed in the offseason from the Houston Texans to add depth to the Titans' receiving corps, but the 11th-year receiver underwent disc surgery on his back in July. Walter has not participated in training camp, and will begin the season on the team's PUP list. This means after six weeks into the season there will be a three week window where the team can decide to either activate Walter or place him on injured reserve. By placing Walter on the regular season PUP list, the Titans will not currently use up a roster spot with the veteran receiver.
Despite Walter's absence, the Titans remain deep at wide receiver with Nate Washington, Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright, Damian Williams, and rookie second-round pick Justin Hunter. Second-year receiver Michael Preston has also had a really good preseason so far, leading the team in receiving yards with 144 and receiving touchdowns with two.
By placing Walter on the PUP list, the Titans became one player closer to reaching the mandatory 75, but they still had to waive thirteen more players on Monday.
Here is a list of the players they released: tackle Barry Richardson, guard Oscar Johnson, center Eloy Atkinson, cornerback George Baker, safety Tracy Wilson, linebackers Greg Jones and Kadarron Anderson, kicker Maikon Bonani, tight ends Martell Webb and DeMarco Crosby, and receivers Justin Hilton, Diondre Borel, and Roberto Wallace.
Richardson, Jones, and Wilson were the only players released that had any NFL experience. Both Jones and Wilson played reserve roles on the Tennessee defense last season, and Richardson played for both the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams.
Out of the three receivers released, neither one recorded a reception during the preseason, and defensive players Baker, Wilson, and Anderson did little to impress during the exhibition games.
The Titans will have one final evaluation in their final exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night before having to cut their roster down to 53 players on Saturday. The next wave of cuts will be a tough one.
