Jets' Mark Sanchez unlikely to start season opener

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is likely to miss the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 8. The fifth-year pro out of USC is suffering from a deep shoulder bruise picked in the fourth quarter of the preseason game versus in state rival New York Giants.

Ian Rapport reports that although the Jets still have Sanchez at day-to-day there is worry within the organisation that he could miss longer.
Sanchez has been in the midst of a quarterback battle with rookie Geno Smith. The 5th overall pick in the 2009 draft had a poor year in 2012, throwing 18 interceptions to just 13 touchdowns. His 2012 season will be remembered for a play known as the 'butt fumble' against the New England Patriots in a blowout loss.

Mark Sanchez may not return to the starting lineup now as new general manager John Idzik may want to usher in the new era with Geno Smith. Smith was selected in the second round to become the franchise quarterback the Jets have been searching for. A moniker Sanchez has struggled to fill.
