An MRI confirmed that New York Giants safety Stevie Brown has a torn ACL and will miss the 2013 season, the team announced Sunday. The injury was originally diagnosed as a sprained knee.
Ryan Mundy will likely take over the starting role at free safety with Brown being placed on the season ending injured reserve list. Fellow safety Antrel Rolle is still recovering from a sprained ankle but is expected to be healthy in time to play Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants will certainly miss Brown's presence this season. In 2012 he recorded a team high eight interceptions, and a league leading 307 interception return yards. He appeared to be picking up right where he left off last season before sustaining the injury while returning an interception from New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith. Luckily for the Giants, they acquired Mundy via free agency during the offseason. Mundy is very serviceable as a starting safety, but the Giants defense will be much less dynamic without Brown's ball hawking skills.
