Texans S Ed Reed’s status uncertain

The Houston Texans are lining up to have a terrific defense entering the 2013 season. This will be the case all the more if Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed is able to return to full health by the start of the regular season. However, at this point, John McClain of The Houston Chronicle reports that no one has any idea when Reed will return healthy.
The defense has new starters in nose tackle Earl Mitchell, outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus and, at some point, free safety Ed Reed. Nobody has a clue when Reed (hip) is going to be healthy and ready to play.
With the addition of Reed to a Texans’ defensive unit already including J.J. Watt, Brian Cushing and Johnathan Joseph, Houston has a chance to be even better on that end of the ball than last season. Of course, health always comes into question, and there’s no indication if Reed and his ailing hip will be able to start the regular season.

While it’s unclear at this point, there is a chance that the Texans didn’t have all of the information in front of them when they signed Reed this offseason. While the veteran safety reportedly knew he’d require hip surgery, his condition is unique and makes for a tricky rehab period. All the team can do now is wait and see if he’ll be able to return to the Reed of old.
