The Dallas Cowboys weren’t able to complete their first full
day of practice at training camp before suffering their first significant
injury of the new season. Defensive end Tyrone Crawford was carted off the
field with a lower leg injury, and the team has since announced that he’s
suffered a season-ending torn Achilles, according to Nick Eatman of
DallasCowboys.com.
Crawford – a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft – couldn’t
put any weight on his injured foot as he exited the field. He was clearly
upset, as he seemed to know the injury was significant.
The Cowboys were counting on using Crawford in their defensive
line rotation this season. He appeared in all 16 games last year, accounting
for 33 tackles and five quarterback pressures. He was considered the team’s top
backup behind starters Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Ware, and there was a
chance that he would have seen time at defensive tackle.
If Crawford undergoes surgery in the near future, it would
end his season. Eaton points out that linebacker Caleb McSurdy and safety Barry
Church – who each underwent similar procedures last season around this time –
made it back this year in time for summer practices and were on the field for
the start of training camp.
