The New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady have
reached an agreement on a three-year extension that will help the team’s salary
cap and provide the All-Pro with a “contract for life,” as reported by Peter King of Sports Illustrated.
Brady will receive “significantly less money than the market
will bear” in order to help the Patriots remain competitive for his tenure with
the club. The following shows Brady’s cap numbers over the next five seasons:
2013: $13.8 million
2014: $14.8 million
2015: $13 million
2016: $14 million
2017: $15 million
2014: $14.8 million
2015: $13 million
2016: $14 million
2017: $15 million
The three-year extension is worth $27 million. King
describes this as an eye-popping figure, as Brady was expected to command
double this amount. The extension provides New England with roughly $20 million
in cap space for the 2013 season, and $30 million in space over the next two
years.
Brady’s string of impressive performances continued last
season, as he finished the year completing 63 percent of his passes for 4,827
yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
