Entering the offseason, it appeared Michael Vick had taken
his last snap for the Philadelphia Eagles. Enter Chip Kelly and the alternative options available, and Vick wound up restructuring his agreement with the
Eagles. Vick’s new deal is reportedly for three years and it will have him earn
at least $7 million next season, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Vick was set to make $15.5 million next year, and his
contract was to count $16.9 million against the Eagles’ salary cap. It was a
foregone conclusion that this wouldn’t be the case, but it also has to be considered somewhat of a surprise to see Vick returning with the Eagles.
Vick was benched in favor of rookie Nick Foles last season.
He appeared to be all but out the door before Chip Kelly was hired. Vick would appear
to be the best available option, in an otherwise weak draft and free agent
quarterback class, to run Kelly’s system, and it looks like the Eagles are
going to use him as a potential one-year bridge to whoever the long-term
starter will be.
Vick is said to be in open competition with Foles, but the
second-year player isn’t as clear of a fit for Kelly’s dynamic system. For this
reason, we could see a lot more Vick with the Eagles in 2013.
