Our coverage here is limited to injuries - issues players deal with, recover from, and move on. However, today something far more tragic happened. The Kansas City Chiefs' Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and mother of his child, then he turned the gun on himself.
According to the Kansas City Star's Glenn Rice and Kevin Collison, Belcher killed his girlfriend, then he drove to the Arrowhead Stadium facilities where he was confronted by team personnel including coach Romeo Crennel. They tried to stop Belcher from harming anyone else or himself, but he ultimately shot himself in the head.
This is nothing like anything we've ever covered here. It's a horrific story that goes beyond the game of football. Two mothers lost their children today. A child lost her mother and father. The tragedy is beyond comprehension.
Police are investigating, and as of now there is no indication as to what set these events in motion.
Belcher was 25 years old and a four-year veteran of the Kansas City Chiefs. He had played in all 11 games this season.
