49ers Injury Report: Alex Smith or Collin Kaepernick?

The San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t start Colin Kaepernick on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints because he’s the hot hand but because the Niners should “make the smart call” about Alex Smith’s health, according to Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The 49ers should start Colin Kaepernick against New Orleans on Sunday because somebody, somewhere, has to make the smart call about players' health.

Jenkins believes the 49ers should “lean toward full recovery” when it comes to Smith rather than simply throw him back out there two weeks after sustaining a concussion.

While Smith may be the superior option, Kaepernick showed he can play last Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Plus, Jenkins points out that the 49ers can afford to take time with Smith considering they currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Seahawks in the otherwise lackluster NFC West.

Jenkins believes the 49ers need to consider Smith “playing the game for years, and being a healthy, clear-thinking individual in retirement,” over simply one week of football.
